IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lance R.
Stone
January 1, 1931 – January 16, 2025
Lance R. (Freddy) Stone, 94, of Brockton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 16, 2025. He was the husband of the late Janet M. (Williams) Stone.
Born in Brockton on January 1, 1931, he was the son of the late Frederick and Glen (Nee) Stone. Lance made local headlines as he was the first baby born in Brockton on New Year's Day 1931. Lance wore many different hats throughout his life but his true calling was to serve his country. He began his military career in 1949 with the National Guard and in 1956 he transferred to the United Stated Navy with honorable discharge in 1957. Lance felt his ambition to serve his country had not been satisfied and with special request to reenlist he was granted an age waiver by the Bureau of Navy Personnel at the age of 37. He became a decorated Navy Seabee in United States Naval Construction Battalions 12 Unit. Lance served two deployments in the Vietnam War for which he was awarded A Purple Heart Medal along with many other accolades. Subsequent to his military service Lance was a police officer for the NYPD before returning back to his home town of Brockton where he became a letter carrier, a job he truly loved. Lance finished his career with the United States Postal Service retiring in 1993. Serving his country in many ways he was a true patriot.
Lance is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Costello and Glenda Stone, both of Hanover. His grandchildren, Sean, Katie, Mary and Maggie Davenport.
Lance was the father of the late James P. Davenport (Nancy) and the late Lance A. Stone (Rosemary). Lance was the brother of the late Linwood (Bubba) Stone and the late Alice Kennerson. Lance also loved his late cat Sasha.
Lance brought fun everywhere he went, from local restaurants to the dialysis center were just a few places where he found friends. He was always smiling and had a generous heart. The staff at the dialysis center affectionately called him, "Stoney". Toward the end of his life, his care takers and dear friends Norah and Shannan referred to him as, "Fancy Pants Lance."
Please help us honor Lance's life. Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, January 25th from 9:00-11:00 AM at the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., Brockton, followed by a funeral service at immediately after. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.
In lieu of flowers Lance would like you to consider donating to a local charity of your choice, church or animal shelter. You will see your donation work in real time.
Donating to many charities was a passion of Lance's as he was a selfless human being.
