Obituary

Lloyd (Mitty) Frederick Tighe of North Easton, MA died on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the age of 87 surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of 61 years to his high school sweetheart Irene Gladys (Covert) Tighe, who passed away four years prior on the same day. Born November 11, 1931 in Brockton, MA Mitty was the son of Gladys (Woodland) Tighe and Matthew Jerome Tighe, Jr. and youngest brother of Matthew Tighe, III, Robert J. Tighe and Bertha (Bunny) Hill all of Brockton, MA. Lloyd is survived by his two sons Michael Tighe, and his wife Mary; Bradford Tighe and Jeannette Tighe; Five grandchildren, Christopher Tighe and his wife Kathryn; Kristin Coe and her husband Brian; Bethany Camarota and her husband Anthony; Katelyn Tighe; Katharine Tighe; and six great grandchildren. Mitty was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was known for his passion for physical fitness even before it was fashionable and carried through his workouts and walking routines until just recently. In his younger years, he would frequently run 17 miles from Brockton to Pinehurst Beach in Wareham, MA to visit Irene at her summer cottage. He played football for Brockton High School, Indiana University on full scholarship and the U.S. Army, where he also instructed physical education for paratroopers. In the Army he earned 'National Lineman of the Year' two consecutive years in a row and was later drafted by the Pittsburg Steelers. A highlight of his football career was playing on the Brockton High School powerhouse football team when they won the National Championship at the Orange Bowl against Miami Edison High School in Miami, FL in 1948. He and his friends also sparred with the famed Brockton boxer Rocky Marciano and routinely played handball at the Brockton YMCA. After his football career, Mitty worked at Dairy Lea Creamery and Tighe Real Estate. Later in life, he enjoyed running at D.W. Field Park, watching his grandchildren play sports and vacationing with his wife, family and friends in Aruba. He will be greatly missed. A Memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, February 13th from 4:00 to 7:00PM in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St.,(Rt.123) Brockton. Interment will be at a later date in the Pine Hill Cemetery, West Bridgewater.
