Obituary

Louis "Sonny" Colombo, age 89, of Brockton, died peacefully on June 20th after a long battle with dementia. Sonny was the devoted husband to the late Margaret "Peggy" (Moynihan) Colombo for 61 years. He passed on what would have been their 63rd wedding anniversary. Born and raised in Brockton, he was the son of the late Flaviano Colombo and Clara (Galante) Colombo. An avid and accomplished athlete, Sonny played baseball for Brockton High School and the Brockton Legion team before graduating from high school in 1951. He then worked several construction jobs, including the building of the Brockton VA Hospital. He served as an MP in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was also recruited to play for the Army baseball team. After being discharged, he returned to his hometown where he was signed by the Red Sox. Following a stint in the Red Sox farm system, he earned a Bachelor's Degree from Northeastern University through the G.I. Bill. This led to a lifetime career in education, from teaching and coaching at Bourne and Stoughton High Schools, to several administrative roles at Massasoit Community College where he ultimately retired as Acting President in 1997. Sonny also had a passion in politics, where he proudly served as the Ward 2 City Councilor for many years, including two terms as City Council President. In his retirement, Sonny continued his active lifestyle. He could often be found on the golf course, playing tennis, doing daily Word Jumbles with Peggy, shuttling his grandkids to the beach, and coaching his grandkids in backyard wiffle ball games before big pasta dinners. Sonny and Peggy enjoyed long walks together around Falmouth Heights, New Silver Beach, and Nye's Neck. He continued his love of education by working as a substitute teacher for ten years in Mashpee. Additionally, he loved volunteering in the Falmouth Hospital Emergency room as a Family Liaison. Sonny is survived by his daughter Marie Maggio of Mansfield, his son John Colombo and his wife Lisa of Mendon, and his daughter Diane Montani and her husband Anthony of Milford. He was cherished by his sister Claire (Colombo) Kelly and her late husband Paul of Connecticut. He was the loving grandfather of Rose and Matthew Maggio, Connor, Paige and Abigail Colombo, and Christine and John Montani. Sonny was also loved by many nieces and nephews. Lastly, he was treasured by his "granddogs," Daisy Colombo and Nelli Montani, and the late Mixie Montani. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, June 24th at Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont Street, Brockton from 8:30-10:00 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 10:30 AM.
