Obituary

Louis Richard Joseph Marchegiano known for most of his life as Lou "Sonny " Marciano passed away quietly on February 3, 2025, in Bristol, Connecticut at the age of 91.

Sonny Marciano was born on September 29, 1933, in Brockton, Massachusetts to Perino and Pasqualena Marchegiano. He attended Brockton High School and Thayer Academy.

He was a gifted athletic all scholastic football and baseball. He also boxed a little and often sparred with his brother, Rocky Marciano. Exactly 10 years apart to the month, Rocky who became the Undefeated Heavyweight Champion of the World, encouraged his younger brother in all his endeavors and cheered him on as he went on to play professional baseball.

Growing up in Brockton, with his three sisters, Alice Pereira, Concetta (Conge) Langway and Elizabeth (Betty) Colombo, along with his older brother, Rocky and his younger brother Peter Marciano was one of the true joys in his life. Sonny loved telling stories often about his days at James Edgar Playground playing baseball with his friends and cousins.

It was baseball that took Sonny away from his hometown and while traveling away from his home, he later joined the Army. After completing his basic training, Lou "Sonny" Marciano played baseball for the Army team. He was based in Fort Lee, Virginia and while serving his duty he also played on the Army's traveling team.

After his service he went on the play professional Triple A baseball and eventually threw out his arm and joined his brother, Rocky out in California training for fight. Sonny met one of one of Rocky's sponsors and went to work for Holland Furnace Company.

Sonny loved California, married, had two sons, Perry and Louis, Jr. and furthered his career as a liquor salesman and entrepreneur in the wine and liquor industry. He donated much of his time working with the Police Athletic League's Boxing Program and where he helped train young fighters and participated as referee. He was quite often seen on local television in San Jose, California in the ring with these young boxers. Sonny married a second time in California and later had a third son, Tony Marciano in 1978.

While active in many charities, fundraisers, Sonny loved watching his favorite sports – football and baseball – either live at the stadiums or at home watching TV. He was an avid reader and worked on various projects with his friends in the movie business in California.

During the 1980's Sonny moved back home and lived in Cape Cod and for a short time and later in the family home at 168 Dover Street in Brockton. He ventured south to Connecticut and soon started his own business, Port Chester Scaffolding in Port Chester, New York. He enjoyed a successful business and even provided scaffolding at Ellis island in New York where he recounts stories of his parents entering the United States. He also ventured with his friends and partners in the Rocky Marciano Gym located in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Lou "Sonny" Marciano held many titles in his life, from athlete to entrepreneur, but his favorite role was being a father, grandfather, brother, uncle and cousin. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family and cheering on their activities and goals. He was always there for them, whether as a spectator, teacher, trainer, or advisor he loved being part of their lives.

During both his working and retirement years his work and business interests brought him to many different countries, but he loved coming home to America. He loved the history and nostalgia of Brockton, Massachusetts. He loved coming home where he could enjoy the Italian food he so dearly loved.

One thing he found endless enjoyment with was sitting with his sons, nephews and nieces and listening to their questions, stories and adding a few of his own. Wherever he went he would graciously respond to his audience, whether it be family or friends or new acquaintances. His stories were personal, often humorous, but always, always interesting.
