Obituary

M. Jane Manthorne M. Jane Manthorne , 85, of Brockton, passed away Friday, February 12, 2010 at the Braemoor Nursing Home in Brockton after a period of failing health. Born in Brockton, she was the daughter of the late Walter Manthorne and Alice (MacFarlane) Manthorne. A lifelong resident of Brockton, she graduated from Brockton High School in 1942. She served in the United States Navy and Naval Reserve. Miss. Manthorne was very active in the Brockton Public Library System. She was the former assistant director of the Boston Public Library. In 1992 she was awarded the Alumni Achievement Award by Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science, where she received her master's degree in 1949. The award recognizes those whose accomplishments are clearly and measurably superior to those of most other members of the profession. She was a magna cum laude graduate of Bryn Mawr in 1946, her career spans teaching; book reviewing, publishing, the arts, and community service. She served as president of the Young Adult Services Division, American Library Association; part-time instructor at Simmons, University of Utah, Bridgewater State College, and other schools; consultant, reviewer, columnist, or write for the major library journals and the New York Times. In 1978 she co-founded the publishing firm Hermes Press. Her Hewins-Melcher lecture, "Lachrymose Ladies," received much attention for its witty interpretation of Martha Finley's Elsie Dinsmore series. In 1987 the Women's National Book Association named her as one of 70 women in the nation "who has made a difference in the world of books," and in 1991 the Boston Chapter honored her as "Boston Bookwoman." In 1993 she founded an endowment in the arts at Bryn Mawr College. Her responsibilities at Boston Public Library ranged from service to young people to acting as corporation clerk, she also was curator of publications and consultant to BPL Trustees. She was vice president of Horn Book Corporation, governor and editor of Copley Society of Boston, editor of the Boston Chapter Newsletter WNBA, and board member of Salvation Army, also Governor Weld appointed her to the Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council. She summered in Falmouth for over 40 years. She is survived by her dear friend and Business Partner, Hermes Boyatis for over 50 years; she is also survived by several cousins. Funeral Information Funeral services will be held in the Russell Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt123) Brockton on Wednesday, February 17th at 10:00AM. The Rev. Patricia Hayes will officiate. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours in the Russell Pica Funeral Home Tuesday 4:00-7:00PM.
