Obituary

"Maarten" Russell The Russell Family is saddened to announce the passing of our Pal, "Maarten". Maarten stopped wagging his tail on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at his home in Brockton surrounded by his family after an 8 month courageous battle with Osteosarcoma. Maarten named after the "Friendly" Caribbean Island of St. Maarten was born Monday, April 22, 2002 in Barnstable. He was the son of Brodie and Gem. Maarten was nurtured and cared for during his first few months by Debbie Traugot and her family at Beechwood Golden Retrievers. Maarten then met his new family on Father's Day, June 16, 2002. Maarten was known for his unconditional love that he showed towards everyone. His smile and friendship was unforgettable. Maarten was also know for making human food sound so good as he would chew on his food with full excitement. Maarten enjoyed eating pizza crust, hunting for golf balls, going for rides in the car, and most of all family gatherings. Maarten was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in March of 2009. In June of 2009 Maarten's courageous battle continued with his front paw being amputated. Maarten never let that bother him as he hopped out of the hospital the day after surgery to start his new life as a tri-paw Golden. Maarten within days learned how to go up and down stairs and to jump in a car for a ride. He then underwent chemotherapy treatments and never stopped smiling or let his tail stop wagging. He was a true fighter. Maarten was the best pal and son of David F. Russell, Jr. and Anne Marie Russell; adored grandson of David F. Russell and Sally Russell; proud godson and nephew of Maura Russell; beloved nephew of Suzanne and Brian Backoff; he is also survived by several friends that touched his life. Maarten and his family want to thank Dr. Ed Kochin, Melissa, Michelle and everyone at Cape Cod Veternary Specialist and also Dr. Michelle Silver of New England Veterinary Oncology Group. With all of their love and guidance Maarten enjoyed his life until his last day. Maarten Fought the Good Fight, Maarten finished the Race, Maarten Kept the Faith. The love, laughs, and joy he has brought to his family and friends for over 7 years will forever be remembered and missed. Funeral Information Maarten was laid to rest in his favorite spot on Saturday, November 21, 2009.
