Manuel "Nobo" Lopes Ribeiro
, 89, of Brockton died Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Tufts Medical Center, Boston after a period of failing health. He was the husband of Marcelina Goncalves.
Born January 13, 1920 in Fogo, Nossa Senhora de Ajuda, Cape Verde, he was the son of the late Benjamin Lopes Ribeiro and Ines Goncalves Ribeiro.
Nobo grew up to become a fairly wealthy farmer in Santa Catarina, Fogo where he lived most of his life in Cape Verde. He was also the father of a very large family.
In 1951, Nobo came to the U.S. to meet his father. In 1962-1963 he brought his family over from Cape Verde to live in Scituate, MA. He returned to Cape Verde in 1972 where he stayed for twenty more years. In 1994 he returned with more of his family to make his home in Brockton.
He had his first child after he got married at the age of 17 and his last at the age of 83. From the time his first child was born until the last one, Nobo had seen his children being born on average of over a child per year. Nobo was the loving father of many.
Nobo is survived by his wife Marcelina Goncalves and his many children and grandchildren.

Funeral from the Russell Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St. (Rte 123), Brockton on Wednesday, Sept. 23rd at 9:30AM followed by a funeral mass in St. Edith Stein Parish/St. Edward Church at 10:30AM. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours in the Russell Pica Funeral Home Tuesday 5:00-9:00PM.
