Obituary

Margaret Therese Langley, 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep in her own bedroom at her Brockton home on April 17, 2021. She was born in Brockton, the third daughter of Raymond Langley and Charlotte M. (Higgins) Langley. Raised in the Montello section of Brockton, she cherished fond memories of her mother (who she lost as a girl when she was just fourteen) and a childhood that included summers at the Montello Pool, wintertime ice skating down on The Muck, and movies at the Park Theater. Other cherished memories were summers on the cape where, as a young woman after graduating from St. Gregory's Catholic High School for girls in Dorchester, she would split her time between the beach and waitressing at Howard Johnson's to pay her room and board and save for college. After obtaining a degree in library science, she began a career marked by some thirty years of public service as an elementary school librarian for the Milton Public Schools until her retirement in 1990. Over the course of that career, she would make many friendly acquaintances and form a few lasting friendships with select colleagues, all the while caring first for her orphaned little brother Francis and then for her disabled big sister Christine. She was a past president of the Boston Chapter of the Women's National Book Association. She enjoyed travelling in Europe and was enchanted by the architecture of Vienna. She was an active member of the Milton Retired Educators' Association and enjoyed their semi-annual luncheons; and always looked forward to the holiday season and the retired teachers' luncheon hosted annually at Milton High School by former superintendent Mary Gormley. Margaret will be remembered by all who knew her for her dignity, flawless manners, humility, kindness, reliability, and the good and pleasant company she invariably provided. She was predeceased by her four siblings, Christine C. Langley, Thomas F. Langley, Mary E. Thomas, and Francis R. Langley, and by her nephew, Daniel G. Langley, the son of Francis. She is survived by two other nephews, Norman Langley of Pfronten, Germany, and John Langley of Fuessen, Germany, sons of her older brother Thomas. She is also survived by two first cousins, Lorraine G. (Higgins) McCabe and Maureen A. (Higgins) Haughey, both of Brockton. Margaret will be especially missed by her lifelong friend Mary Ellen ("Ellen") Keane, of Brockton, by Ellen's children Elizabeth and Peter, both of Easton, and by Peter's wife Colleen and their sons Connor and Brendan, to whom "Mag" was as beloved as any close and oft-invited aunt. She endures in the heart and memory of her friend Paul Adams. Margaret's surviving family and friends extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses of Old Colony Hospice, especially Adna and Elise, for the gentle and highly competent care and comfort that they provided to Margaret, especially over the last two weeks of her life, helping her to pass from this life to the next as she wished, in the comfort of her own home, without pain, in peaceful sleep. Calling hours Friday, April 23rd from 9:00am to 10:30am in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St.,(Rt.123) Brockton followed by a funeral Mass for the repose of her soul at 11:00am in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 439 West St., Brockton.
