Maria Odete (Vaz) Lopes, 66 of Brockton passed away peacefully on January 10, 2024, after a period of failing health and battling cancer at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital.
Born April 17, 1957 in Praia, Santiago, Cabo Verde. She was the daughter of the late Claudino Vaz DeCarvalho and Clotilde Pereira DeCarvalho.
She immigrated to the United States in 1986, settling in Brockton Massachusetts with her late husband, Danilo Lopes, and had another child later joined by their other children from Cabo Verde.
Maria loved her Children, and if necessary she would go to war for her grandchildren and great-granddaughter Milani whom she adored. Maria was the best mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was a great friend and a family-oriented person, she was a hard-working, strong, resilient, kind, caring, and loving person. She was well known for speaking her mind. Maria loved having family gatherings, and she was the best chef. Another one of her kindness was feeding the most vulnerable whenever she could and she loved cooking huge amounts of food. She dedicated most of her life to working hard to provide for her family in the U.S. and Cabo Verde. Maria was loved by many people and they always have great stories about the past how she fed or helped them in any way shape or form.
In Addition to her late husband, she is survived by her six children. Antonio Brito of CV, Amandio Lopes of Pawtucket RI, Emilda Dasilva of Brockton, late Anilton Brito of Brockton, Jorge Brito of Brockton, and Danny Lopes of Brockton. She had twenty grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, she is also survived by her four daughter-in-law and son-in-law and extended grandchildren. She was loved by her faith based family at Gospel of Grace Baptist Church in Taunton Ma, she enjoyed the weekly services specially on Sundays she would rejoice, dancing and worship her Lord and Savior with great joy.
The family would like to thank the amazing medical care team at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston for going above and beyond and the staff of Brockton Neighborhood Health Center which cared for her for a long time specially her primary care physician Joseph Panerio-Langer whom she adored.
Visitation and her funeral service will be held at the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont Street Brockton, MA on Wednesday, January 17th from 5 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at the Coweeset Cemetery, 1001Pearl Street Brockton, MA on Thursday January 18, 2024 at 10 a.m.
