Obituary

Maria Sacorro Alves Teixeira, better known as Sacorro de Chéma, of Brockton, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2023.

Daughter of Raimundo Alves Teixeira and Marcelina Alves Teixeira, she was born on August 17, 1932 in Figueira Pavão, Santa Catarina, Fogo, Cape Verde. She was a beloved Grandmother, Mother and Friend to all.

Sacorro de Chéma was a fearless and feisty woman, working in the field and doing whatever necessary to provide for her family, a true a definition of a strong Cape Verdean woman.

Mother of 8 children, 52 grandchildren and countless great-grandchildren, she raised and took care of several kids as if her own, without any kind of prejudice or discrimination. She was a friendly person and advisor, she was always available to help and very generous, an amazing soul.

A woman of various talents; dancer, chef, midwife, and traditional Icon. Sacorro de Chéma had an enormous passion for Coladeira, a traditional music from Cape Verde, where there's large gathering of people ranging from children to adults, surrounding groups playing drums, women singing and chanting, others dancing, overall expressing joy and making people Happy. She was chosen as one of the Coladeira dancers at the Festivities of São Filipe. She was also Godmother of Knights at the feast of São Filipe.

She was an accomplished cook, cooking for a large number of people at parties and family gatherings.

She was also a famous midwife at the São Filipe hospital, helping many mothers to give birth.

Sacorro de Chéma is remembered as the Pillar and Unity Factor of the family, as she called everyone to remind them the importance of always being close and united. Everyone keeps the beautiful and curious image of Sacorro in the living room window reporting to Chéma about everyone who came to the house.

In the pain of the loss of our Beloved Sacorro de Chéma, the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family members and friends say goodbye with a smile, as she will be remembered as a strong, cheerful and fun woman.

She is survived by her children; Marcelina A. Goncalves, Manuel A. Teixeira, Joao D. Teixeira, Augusto Andrade, Laidina A. Monteiro, Flavia DeAndrade, Catarina D. Pires, Jose D. Andrade. Marcelina Andrade, Madueno Andrade, Lenita Andrade, Sandra Andrade, Vital Andrade, Denise Teixeira, Bruno Andrade and Suely DeAndrade. 52 Grandchildren, several great grandchildren; and her siblings Abel Fernandes Teixeira, Natália Rodrigues, Antônio lopes Fernandes, Fernando Rodrigues Teixeira. She was also the mother of the late Rosilda DeAndrade and Maria Nassimento Andrade; and sister of the late Edmundo Fernandes Teixeira.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 25th at 9:00AM in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St.(Rt.123) Brockton followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00AM in St. Edith Stein Parish, 71 East Main St., Brockton. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, May 24th from 4:00PM to 8:00PM.
