Obituary

Marianna (Paparo) "Nina" Castano, 93, of Bourne, formerly of Brockton, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 1, 2022, at her home under the care of her family and Visiting Nurses Association of Cape Cod Hospice. Born on March 18, 1929, in Gasperina, Italy, she was the wife of the late Giuseppe "Joe/Peppino" Castano; and the daughter of the late Francesco and Rosaria (Macrina) Paparo. Nina is survived by her daughter, Silvana Maria Castano of Bourne, MA, formerly of Westwood, MA and Brockton, MA, and her sister Maria Teresa (Paparo) Macrina of Montepaone, Calabria, Italy. She was the mother of the late baby Maria Castano who passed away just after birth, and the sister of the late Maria (Paparo) Carchidi of Gasperina, Italy, and Dominic Paparo of Brockton, also formerly of Gasperina, Italy. Nina leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Nina grew up in a loving and close-knit family In Gasperina, a small town located in Calabria, Italy. She married her true love "Peppino" in December 1950. In May of 1957, she left Italy with her husband and three-year-old daughter to come to America, where they settled in Brockton. Having learned to sew at an early age, Nina was a very talented seamstress who made clothing for various designer manufacturers, as well as for her own family. She also loved to knit, crochet, and especially to cook. While pasta, meatballs, bracciole, and of course "cotolette" were her specialties, she excelled at everything she tried. After her husband Joe passed, Nina took on the role of gardener. While she said that her garden was going to be smaller, she still had to have the usual Italian green beans, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, and of course parsley, basil, and oregano….so much for the "smaller" garden! Before moving to Bourne with her daughter, where she attended St. John the Evangelist Parish in Pocasset, she was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Brockton. She attended daily Mass and was a member of the Women's Sodality, the Italian Woman's Club, and the Twentieth Century Catholic Women's Club. What carried Nina throughout her life, and what she displayed in a quiet, non-threatening way, was her Faith. She had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. As a young girl, she enrolled in the Association of the Perpetual Rosary, organized by a Dominican Order of Priests. She pledged to recite the complete 15-decade Rosary on the first Saturday of every month at 7:00 PM. She lived up to her promise and never missed a Saturday night. "Zia Anna," Zia Nina," wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend; a dear, sweet woman who loved her entire family (including friends as family) with all of her heart. Thank you for all the love you have given to each of us. We will miss you dearly but will hold you deep in our hearts. The family wishes to thank all those who loved Nina and showed their support throughout her life. Special thanks go to her VNA Hospice Nurse and Health Aides. With their skills, their thoughtfulness, their support, and their faith, they helped us on this difficult but loving final journey.
