IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marie D. (Hughes)
Keyes
May 25, 1925 – May 11, 2024
Marie (Hughes) Keyes of East Bridgewater died peacefully in her sleep on May 11 just prior to her 99th birthday. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward (Eddie) Keyes. Marie was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts on May 25, 1925, and was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Cadagan) Hughes. She was a graduate of Dorchester High School class of 1942 and worked as a bank teller and later as a financial secretary in a private firm. Upon Eddie's return as a veteran of WW2, they were married on July 4, 1946 taking up residence in Dorchester then building their lovely cape style home in Hyde Park where she and Eddie resided and raised their children for the next 51 years. After Eddie's passing, she later moved to East Bridgewater in order to be closer to her children. While residing in Hyde Park, Marie was a vibrant member of St Pius X Church in Milton and taught elementary grade CCD at the church specializing in preparing children for their 1st communion. She was also active in community activities such as Red Cross Blood drives, Cub Scout Den Mother, the Boston Firefighters Women's Auxiliary, and St Pius X Ladies Sodality.
Marie took great joy in being involved in family activities and vacations and participated in multiple annual holiday trips with her children and grandchildren to NYC to view the Rockettes and enjoy horse carriage rides and the city lights of Times Square and Central Park. Marie especially enjoyed knitting and crocheting for gifting baby outfits and blankets at the birth of her grandchildren. She thoroughly enjoyed hosting family Thanksgivings in her home in Hyde Park, then later as a guest at her children's homes. Her birthday celebrations with family at Castle Island in South Boston became a ritual attended by all. She also loved celebrating the Christmas holidays with her extended family and initiated and hosted annual celebration events known throughout social media as Grandmother's Holly Tea. In their retirement years, Marie and Eddie enjoyed traveling and taking cruises.
Marie had 10 children and was preceded in death by sons Edward and Joseph, brothers George Hughes, her twin brother Walter Hughes, and her sister Margaret Caputo. Marie is survived by her daughters Linda Buckley (late husband William) of East Bridgewater, Janet Daly and her husband John of Bridgewater, and Patricia Lucchetti and her husband Joseph of Bridgewater; sons James Keyes and his wife Barbara of Plymouth, George Keyes and his wife Pilar of Walpole, Gerard Keyes and his wife Helen of Quincy, Lawrence Keyes and his wife Denise of Derry, New Hampshire, and John Keyes and his wife Laura of Taunton. She is also survived by her brother Frank Hughes of Pembroke, and sisters Louise Small of East Bridgewater, and Loretta Crowley of Needham. She was the cherished grandmother of 32 grandchildren and the great grandmother of 50 great grandchildren and many many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life for Marie will take place at the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 441 South Main St, Route 28, West Bridgewater on Monday, May 20 from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm. A 10:00 am Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 21 in St. John's Church, Central St., East Bridgewater. Burial will take place in Mt Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury following the Funeral Mass.
