Marie Jean Frances (Rue) Smith was also known to her loved ones as Jeanne Marie. A form which she felt was more in keeping with the French name of Rue. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts on June 15, 1934. She was the natural born daughter of Dorothea (Croxen) and Frank Rue, but she also was recognized as the daughter of George, Marquerite, Thelma, and Ruth Harrison (all of whom she felt played a significant role in raising and shaping her.)
Marie attended The William Monroe Trotter INNOVATION School, the Henry L. Higginson Elementary school, as well as Lewis Jr. High School. She traveled from Boston during her teen years and moved to Stoughton, Massachusetts where she attended Stoughton High School. Prior to graduating she relocated once again to Bridgewater, Massachusetts. She proudly received her diploma from Bridgewater High school. In 1956 she met and married John J. Smith, and together they raised six wonderful children.
The family was active members of St. Annes Episcopal Church in North Billerica, Massachusetts. Marie, whenever she could give, also offered money to help those in need through St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Milton, Massachusetts. Marie was one of the founding organizers of Roxbury Community School and served for a year as its Vice President. She then went on to serve as a spokesperson as well. She was an avid supporter of the Roxbury Boys Club swim team, escorting team members to various out of city meets.
In 1971, she joined the New England Telephone Company now known as Verizon. Marie later transferred over to AT&T to continue to be a Marine Operator. Conversing with boats and planes brought her a great deal of joy. Although she moved to Brockton, Marie always considered herself to be a Bostonian and took great pride in her Boston heritage.
She is survived by her children,Michelle Smith, Mark & Pamela Smith, Marla Smith-Akumani & Eric Akumani, Jennifer Smith-Workman & Robert Workman & a host of grandchildren & great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by all of her parents, her only sister Gertrude Anderson, several brothers, her devoted husband, John, and her beloved sons Jefferey J. Smith and Michael J. Smith. Marie believed that there was a beautiful garden where all the souls of the departed would be there waiting to greet you. Where there was Joy and Love and Happiness to her it would be the ultimate Family Re-union! She leaves you with love, and the belief that one day we will all meet again in that garden for those she leaves to mourn her.
