Mary J. Buckley
Mary Joanna (LoGuidice) Buckley, 87, of Brockton and Falmouth, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at JML Care Center of Falmouth after a period of failing health. She was the wife of Kenneth J. Buckley, Sr.
Born March 24, 1921 in Brockton, she was the daughter of the late Salvatore LoGuidice and Theresa (Paterno) LoGuidice. Mary was the only one of her four siblings not to be born at 25 Perry Avenue though she spent all but fifteen years of her life living at that address.
She attended Brockton public schools. She then went on to Massachusetts General Hospital for nursing. She later attended Simmons College receiving certification in Public Health, Northeastern University for certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Emmanuel College where she received her B.A. degree in Education and Psychology.
She worked as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, a visiting nurse, school nurse in the Brockton School system and after her retirement she became one of the at large Brockton city councilors where she served her constituents faithfully for eleven years. Mary was a no nonsense person who loved people. She took her job as city councilor very serious making sure she listened and took care of all Brockton citizens. She enjoyed her daily routine of visiting and helping people. She was known for her generosity of spirit and welcomed all into her home.
Mary was a member of the following organizations: Brockton National School Nurses Association, Massachusetts Teachers Association, National Education Association, Retired State, County, and Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts.
She also served Community Service for the following: CPR Instructor for American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Instructor of Fire Safety, emergency action and first aid for the elderly. Medic Alert and Southeastern Massachusetts Lung Association, Catholic Charities of Brockton, Massachusetts Catholic Women's Guild, Scholarship Committee Massasoit Community College, Potpourri, Girl Scouts Brownies, St. Colman's Troop Girl Scouts of America, the radio show "Chatting with the Senior Set", Brockton City Councilor from 1982 to present, State Democratic Committee Woman from 1983 to present, past President of Italian Women's Club, past President of Women's Club of Brockton, Chairman of Douglas Fund, former head Nurse for Brockton Public Schools, served on Board of Directors Visiting Nurse Association of Brockton, Co-Chairman of Heart and Flowers Day American Heart Association and served for Brockton Community School Advisory Board.
Mary was involved with many other organizations: St. Colman's Parish, Kiwanis Club, Ireland's Own of Brockton, Brockton Democratic City Committee, A.A.R.P., N.A.A.C.P., Kulani, Golden Agers, B.A.A.R.C., VFW Ladies Auxiliary, D.W. Field Golf Association, Anita Garibaldi Lodge, LIFE, Brockton School Nurses Association, P.M. Club and Century Club of Stonehill College.
While in office for the city of Brockton she provided the following services: Established Neighborhood Watch Programs with the Brockton Police, Mayor's task force on Health and Human Services, Mayor's Advisory Committee on the Handicapped, Member of the Brockton Housing Partnership, Started household hazardous waste day, Established handicapped parking ordinance in Brockton, Created fire lanes in public and private residential areas, Has served on all major council committees and attended all national conventions on cities and towns.
During her life Mary said " I am a very people oriented person." "I have often been accused of belonging to every civic and professional organization in Brockton, but I do it because it allows me to know more about the people that I represent."
She is survived by her husband Kenneth J. Buckley, Sr. of Falmouth; her children, Denise Buckley of Ohio, Kenneth J. Buckley, Jr. of Raynham, and Diane Francis of Tewksbury; her grandchildren, Nicole Pardo, Joseph Buckley, Catherine Francis, Phyllis Francis, and Luke Buckley; her brother, Charles LoGuidice of Falmouth. She was the sister of the late Frances Moynihan, Mario LoGuidice, and John LoGuidice.

Funeral from the Russell Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt123) Brockton on Wednesday, May 21st at 8:00AM thence to Christ the King Church (St. Colman Church), 42 Wendell Ave., Brockton where a funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of her soul at 9:00AM. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours in the Russell Pica Funeral Home Tuesday 4:00-8:00PM.
