Michael Bates, a Boston firefighter for 29 years passed away on Wednesday; May 11, 2022, at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital due to complications from cancer. Michael Bates was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was born in Roxbury, MA on March 16, 1958. He served his country -- and he served his community. Michael began working with the Boston Fire Department at Ladder 18 in 1982 and retired from Ladder 29 in 2011. He is preceded in death by his parents Kenneth & Mary Bates. Michael is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lillian Bates; two sons, Michael Bates Jr, and Matthew (Lauren) Bates, a daughter; Danielle (Dan) Bates, and three brothers; Steven Bates, George Bates, and Robert Bates. Michael was known as a "true Jake" and as someone who could always be counted on to be there for his brother firefighters. He will be missed by a host of family members, friends, and all who knew him well. Plans for a memorial service are pending.
