Michael P. Ciulla of Brockton passed away quietly on June 16, 2026 at the age of 89. Born in Boston’s North End to the late Michael and Mary [DePalma], he spent his early years there before enlisting in the US Air Force. He married Mary [Hass] of St Louis in 1957, and earlier this year they celebrated their 69th anniversary.
While in the Air Force, Michael received many awards, including The Meritorious Service Medal. His wife and four boys lived in Japan, Germany, Greece and several US states during his honorable military service of 21 years.
Michael then moved with his family back to Massachusetts and worked as a maintenance technician for the Brockton VA Hospital for ten years. It was during this time that he solved a critically important problem with the electronics of the specialized hospital beds used for operations and ICU. These beds were going to be replaced nationwide at great expense, but he devised an inexpensive solution to the electrical problem. President Jimmy Carter was informed of this and wrote him a letter of appreciation in saving the government the huge cost to replace all these specialized beds.
Michael retired after working several more years for the Brockton US Postal Service, and also implemented cost saving solutions while there as well. He loved the North End and assisted with the North End’s annual Fisherman’s Feast for several years.
Michael was brother to the late Anthony Ciulla of Winthrop. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, his four sons Michael (aka Mick), Daniel, Paul, and Joseph, along with six grandchildren [Jennifer, Jonathan, Eric, Andrew, Catherine, Nikole] and three great grandchildren. He loved singing and dancing.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family during visiting hours on Tuesday, June 23rd between 8:45 – 10:30 AM at the Russell & Pica Funeral Home at 165 Belmont Street in Brockton. A prayer service will be held there from 10:30 until 11 am, followed by travel to the Massachusetts National Cemetery on Cape Cod for a 12:30 PM service.
