Nikolas Golas, a nonagenarian who worked in several city shoe factories for more than four decades, died peacefully at Good Samaritan Medical Center on Feb. 10, 2016. He was 90.
Born in Klima, a small village in the region of Kozani, Greece, Golas served as a policeman in his native homeland during the Greek Revolutionary War that followed World War II. He immigrated to the United States in 1956.
He was the beloved husband of Vasiliki (Kazamias) Golas for 54 years. He was the son of the late Stergios and Paraskevoula Golas and one of 11 children. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sisters, Penny Papadopoulos and Tina Tsarhopoulos of Brockton and several nieces and nephews in the United States and Greece.
In his spare time, he lovingly tended to his large garden in the back yard of his first home on the top of the hill on Huntington Street, where he grew tomatoes, cucumbers, corn and the tallest sunflowers in the neighborhood. He followed the stock market closely and was an avid reader of the Wall Street Journal. He traveled to Greece several times and he enjoyed spending time at Duxbury Beach and D.W. Field Park. He took great pride in being an American and learning to drive his first car, a Chevy Nova.
He was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and the Pan Macedonian Society.
He will be lovingly remembered for his quick wit, infectious laugh and storytelling skills.
