Ponze "Terry" Tarentino, 96, of Brockton, passed away surrounded by his beloved family on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Hospital. He was the devoted husband of the late June (Lincoln) Tarentino to whom he was married for 68 years.
Ponze was born in Brockton and lived there his entire life. He was the son of the late Michael and Angelica (Boggia) Tarentino. He graduated from Brockton High School, class of 1939. Following graduation, he worked at the South Weymouth Naval Air Station. Ponze served in the United States Army Air Corp in World War II. He participated in the D-Day Invasion, Operation Market Garden and Rhineland Actions. He served with the Airborne 313th Troop Carrier Group and the 29th Carrier Squadron as a Staff Sergeant Senior Radio Operator. He was shot down over Bastogne, Belgium on December 23, 1944 and interned in German Stalag Luft 3 for the remainder of the war. Ponze was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, a Purple Heart with an Oak leaf Cluster and a Presidential Unit Citation.
Ponze retired from Woodward's Auto Spring, where he worked for 55 years, retiring in 2000 as Vice President/General Manager. He was a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England patriots. At 96 he stilled enjoyed discussing current events and was an avid reader. Most of all, Ponze loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his children; Patricia Farland and her husband the late Robert Farland, Michael and Kathleen Tarentino and Judy and Richard Latham all of Raynham. He was the grandfather to Robert Farland, Colleen Dionisio, Matthew Tarentino, Jennifer Kelley and Katie Grifka. He was also great grandfather to Alissa and Hunter Farland, Dominic Dionisio, Giuliana and Gabriella Grifka and Addison Kelley. He was the brother of the late Louis, John, Ralph, Dominic Tarentino and Mary Tarentino Zipeto. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Funeral from the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt123) Brockton on Friday, March 23rd at 10:00AM thence to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 439 West St., Brockton where a funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at 11:00AM. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home on Thursday from 4:00-7:00PM.
