Obituary

Richard J. "Dick" DeChristopher, of West Yarmouth, MA passed peacefully on Sunday, November 7, 2021 at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, MA. He was 80 years old. Born in Brockton, MA on September 21, 1941 to Mary and Albert DeChristopher, Dick resided in Brockton for the first 50 years of his life. He often reminisced about the good old days of downtown Brockton with its theaters and shops. As a kid, he played Little League baseball there, and his enthusiasm for the sport lasted a lifetime. Whenever family visited, he would begin each conversation talking about the Red Sox, Celtics, or Patriots. The first part of Dick's professional career was as the owner of a barbershop in Pembroke, MA with his father. Later in life, he would talk about all the wonderful people that he met while cutting hair. Eventually, Dick would sell the shop and start his next career running delis for Shaws and Stop and Shop. He had a love of cooking that was passed down to other family members, and he was famous for his homemade meatballs. Traveling and eating at diners were some of his favorite activities. Around 20 years ago, Dick and Beverly made Cape Cod their home. While there, they were part of a large group of friends that called themselves "The Beach Club". Sitting at the beach and chatting became their favorite pastimes. With a quick wit and a sly smile, Dick was fun and entertaining to everyone he met. Dick was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who was preceded in death by his mother Mary Ryan, his father Albert DeChristopher, his first wife Sheryl (Bolster), their daughter Devon Atwood, and his wife Beverly (Lively). He is survived by his children Terri-Lynne and her husband Ray Bigness of Brockton, Richard and his wife Adrian DeChristopher of Brockton, Malinda and her husband Jake Jones of Taunton, Tom Doxsee of Attleboro, Susan and her husband Jason Caldwell of Lakeville, and Michael Jardin of Avon. Dick was the brother of Robert of East Bridgewater, John of AZ, George of Bridgewater, Ann Lesperance of Bridgewater, Margie DeSilva of Middleboro, and Toni Rando of FL. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren (and one on the way), as well as many nieces and nephews. Many of Dick's children's friends called him Dad, because he was the epitome of what a dad should be. A Celebration of Life will be held in March of 2022.
