Richard J. "Dick" Matthews, Sr., 87, passed away Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. He was the husband of Patricia (McCarthy) Matthews. Born March 27, 1930 in Boston, he was the son of the late James F. Matthews and Mary A. (Gill) Matthews. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Weymouth where he was the Class President and then graduated from Stonehill College. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War and then served in the Reserves and retired as an Army Chief Warrant Officer. Dick was a Communications Specialist working for New England Telephone Company for many years. He was a volunteer officer in the Pioneers, Umpire for the Babe Ruth Little League in Weymouth, member of the South Shore radio control club and had served as a select board member in Rockland. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (McCarthy) Matthews; his children, Richard J. Matthews, Jr. and his wife Becky of VT, the late Rhonda Matthews of Quincy, Rita Lammers and her husband Bill of FL, Nancy Ferris of Braintree, Charlene Freccero and her husband Eddie of Bridgewater and Ruth Markham and her husband Christopher of Carver; he is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was the former husband of the late Marguerite (Read) Matthews of Quincy and brother of the late Mary Proctor of Plymouth. Funeral from the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 441 South Main St., (Rt28) West Bridgewater on Thursday, March 15th at 11:00AM thence to St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 103 Center St., Bridgewater where a funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at 12:00PM. Interment will follow in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Calling hours in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4:00-8:00PM.
