Obituary

Richard "Dicky" James Vaughn, 84, of Brockton, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2023. He was the loving husband of Maureen (Campbell) Vaughn for 63 years.

Born on September 16, 1938 in Brockton, he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Lillian M. (Murphy) Vaughn. A lifelong resident of Brockton, Dicky attended Brockton High School before leaving during his junior year to enlist in the United States Marine Corps in 1956.

While assigned to the 6th fleet in the Mediterranean in July of 1958, President Dwight Eisenhower, at the request of the Lebanese president, ordered 1800 Marines to land in Beirut. Dicky was in the first wave to go ashore with orders to secure the airport and dock area. The operation lasted 33 days and was deemed a success. He was honorably discharged in 1959 as a Lance Corporal.

While serving in the Marine Corps, he received three medals which include the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Lebanese Occupation Medal. After being discharged, he received his high school diploma from Massasoit Community College, then in West Bridgewater. Dicky graduated in 1980 from Stonehill College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.

In 1965, he was appointed to the Brockton Police Department and assigned to the midnight-8:00 AM shift, which he served his entire 32 year career. In 1970, he received the department's highest award, the John Zinkevich Award for Valor. He received many accolades throughout his career, retiring in 1997.

He was a proud member of the Brockton Police Honor Guard as well as a Detail Police Officer for George's Cafe, both for 32 years.

Dicky was also a part time employee for Robert and Phyllis Green at their home and business for 55 years and a lifelong member of the Bertocci Memorial Club.

An avid New York Giants fan, he attended many games in the Meadowlands. He enjoyed trips to Florida, Nova Scotia, San Francisco, and many trips to Vegas. He also enjoyed many weekends at his summer home in South Dennis on Cape Cod, and many trips to Maine with his family.

In addition to his wife, Maureen, Dicky is survived by his children MaryEllen Vaughn and Daniel J. Vaughn and his wife Amy; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sons Richard F. Vaughn, Brian P. Vaughn, and Michael F. Vaughn; and his brothers Thomas E. Vaughn and Robert F. Vaughn.

Funeral from the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt123) Brockton on Tuesday, March 28th at 8:45AM thence to St. Ann Church 103 North Main Street, West Bridgewater where a funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home on Monday from 4:00PM-7:00PM.
