IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert "Bob"
Murphy
September 24, 1941 – May 25, 2024
Robert "Bob" Murphy, 82, of Easton (Retired Brockton Police Lieutenant), passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2024. He was the beloved husband of the late (Theresa) Frances (Neubauer) Murphy.
Bob was born and raised in Brockton. He was the son of the late John and Rose (Mangano) Murphy. He was a 1959 graduate of Brockton High School, where he excelled in football and baseball. After high school, Bob enlisted in the Army, where he served two years, ultimately becoming a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne.
Bob joined the Brockton police department in 1964; a job he loved. While working full time, he went back to school and was awarded an Associate's degree from Massasoit in 1973, a Bachelor's degree from Stonehill College in 1977 and a Master's degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College in 1985. He studied hard and rose through the ranks to become sergeant and then lieutenant before retiring in 1997.
After retirement, Bob devoted time to his passions: golfing, gardening and his family. A skilled golfer, he enjoyed "ruining good walks" several times a week, especially near his second home in Boynton Beach, FL. An avid gardener, he and his wife created a kaleidoscope of color in the gardens around their home. A devoted family man, nothing made Bob happier than spending time with his son and daughter, but most of all his granddaughter, Nora.
An ardent sports fan, Bob almost never missed tuning into a Red Sox or Patriots game or golf tournament. He loved being outdoors: walking around his yard, tinkering in his wood shed, or watching his kids play sports. While often quiet and serious, he loved to laugh and joke and tell stories with friends and family. He may not have said much, but when he spoke, everyone listened. A kind and generous soul, Bob never complained. He was always available and would do anything to help his family and friends. His loss will be profound.
Bob is predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Frances; son, Daniel; and his brothers Jack and Jim. He is survived by his sister, Marge St. Jean of The Villages, FL; his daughter Susan (Murphy) Gilmore and her husband Adam, of Easton; and his treasured granddaughter Nora; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and close friends.
Funeral from Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt.123) Brockton on Saturday, June 1st at 10:00 AM thence to Holy Cross Church, 225 Purchase St., S. Easton where a funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at 11:30 AM. Interment to follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Easton. Visiting hours will be held Friday, May 31st in the funeral home from 4:00-7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the Murphy family would appreciate donations to Signature Healthcare for The Daniel Murphy Legacy Scholarship Fund at the Brockton Hospital School of Nursing or a charity of your choice in his name.
