Robert S. Bunar, BPD Retired Age 80

The family of Robert S. Bunar, of Dennis, MA, is saddened to announce his passing on February 13, 2025. Born and raised in Brockton, he was the son of the late John and Nellie Bunar. Bob was a graduate of Brockton High School, Class of 1962.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserves before completing an apprenticeship as an electrician.

He later found his true calling in law enforcement, retiring from the Brockton Police Department in 2001 after a long and distinguished career. Bob earned a master's degree in law enforcement from Anna Maria College and was recognized with numerous medals of valor and commendations for bravery in the line of duty. He was a dedicated member of the Honor Guard and served on the SWAT team.

A passionate fisherman with his Captain's license for over 50 years, Bob cherished his time on the water. Many summer mornings he and "Shorty" could be seen leaving the harbor at dawn.
Some of his most treasured moments were spent taking his family—especially his grandchildren—out on the boat to share his love of the sea. Bob was also an avid amateur radio operator, a hobby he embraced since his teenage years. He earned an Extra Class license and was a member of the Barnstable Amateur Radio Club. Gifted with a mechanical mind, he could fix just about anything and was always eager to help family and friends, never expecting anything in return.

Throughout his life, Bob pursued many interests with enthusiasm. In his younger years, he earned his pilot's license and relished the thrill of flying small planes. He also enjoyed countless fishing trips with his best friend, Michael Bozzuto, traveling to new places and competing in fishing tournaments.

Bob is survived by his beloved life partner, Kathleen Slye; his chosen daughter, Tracy Holland; and his son-in-law, James Holland. He was a devoted grandfather to Jay Holland and Julia Holland, who brought him endless pride and joy. He also leaves behind his nephew, John Bunar; nieces Deborah Bunar and Vicky Riemann; as well as several grand-nephews, grand-nieces, and cherished friends too numerous to name.

.
Bob remained a humble man with a great sense of humor. He made everyone laugh. He leaves a legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to family and service. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.

Visiting hours will be Friday February 21, 2025 at the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street, Brockton from 11am to 2pm with a Celebration of Bob's Life from 2-3pm. Burial will be held at later date.
In lieu of flowers, Bob's family would appreciate a donation in his name to the Brockton Police Dept. Honor Guard, 7 Commercial Street, Brockton, MA 02301.
