Ruth H. (Hanley) McNeill, 92, of Brockton, passed away at her home under the care of her family and hospice. She was the wife of the late Robert J. McNeill.
Born in Brockton on August 21, 1928, she was the daughter of the late J. Murray Hanley and Marion (Shearing) Hanley.
Ruth was a proud lifelong resident of Brockton, growing up on Spring Street near the Ash Street Playground. She attended the Ellis Brett and B.B. Russell schools and graduate from Brockton High 1946. After high school she worked in Brockton at Walkover Shoe and later Raytheon in Waltham MA. In 1955 she married Robert J. "Dick" McNeill, also of Brockton. Together they raised two wonderful sons, Stephen and Jimmy. The family enjoyed frequent vacations. Ruth particularly enjoyed trips travelling to Cape Cod, Ireland and Aruba. Nothing made Ruth happier than family gatherings, were she arrived early and stayed late. She lit up every room she entered. Ruth was famous for her quick wit and great storytelling and enjoyed making people laugh. Ruth returned to the work force as a secretary in the Brockton Public Schools, where she made many lifelong friends. Ruth was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, where she participated in numerous clubs and committees.
Ruth is survived by her sons Stephen G. McNeill and James R. McNeill; grandchildren Matthew McNeill and his wife Nicole, Maureen McNeill and Cameron McNeill; her siblings Joseph Hanley and his wife Marie, Lois Conley, Dorothy Liberator and Kathleen Coughlan and her husband Ronald; sister in-law Muriel Burke and many special nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Mary Rose Giles, Geraldine Fortier and Patricia Mulligan.
A funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of her soul on Thursday, March 18th in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 433 West St., Brockton at 9:30 am with interment to follow in Melrose Cemetery. Calling hours will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt.123) Brockton on Wednesday, March 17th from 4:00-7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude in Ruth's name.
