Obituary

Samuel J. Pizza 87 years, of Brockton, died Saturday September 5, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center after a period of failing health. He was the devoted husband for 64 years of Ruth M. (Smith) Pizza. Sam was born in Philadelphia, PA a son of the late Felix Pizza and Angeline (Ciampa)(Pizza) Mascarello. At the age of 5 he moved to Brockton with his mother and step father John Mascarello and remained a life long resident of the city. He was a 1940 graduate of Brockton High School where he was the class historian and a member of the football team.
During WWII Sam served in the Army Air Corps stationed in the Pacific where he earned two Bronze Stars. He was a self employed cabinet maker for many years and was the owner of Rainbow Plastics, Inc. in Brockton.
Sam was a founding member of the Bertocci Club which he helped to build. In his free time he enjoyed writing and reading, especially research. Over the years Sam and his wife had been “Special Parents” to several children and had opened their home to them.
He was proud of his family and loved to cook Italian meals for them.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter Anne Porcaro and her husband Roger of Brockton and a son Samuel J. Pizza, Jr. and his wife Diana of Norton. He was the grandfather of Mark Porcaro and his wife Melinda, Jason Porcaro and the late Samuel J. Pizza, III. He also leaves 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of Jean Carlozzi of Wareham, Thomas Oliveri of Florida and the late Rose Figuereido, Phyllis Zeoli, Anthony Mascarello and Joseph Oliveri.
Funeral Service in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Wednesday at 11 am with visitation 10 to 11 am. Burial with military honors in Calvary Cemetery.
