Obituary

Sandra Marie (Blumberg) Cassani, also known as Sandy, Mom, Nunnie, Auntie and friend, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 74 on September 4, 2021 surrounded by her loving family after a 4 year battle with ovarian cancer. She fought that horrific disease with such grace, strength, determination and dignity. She never gave up. She never ceased to amaze her family, friends and medical team with her unwavering spirit and courage. Sandy was the daughter of the late Maurice P. Blumberg and Santina (Spadea) Blumberg. She was the devoted wife of her husband, Don, loving mother of her daughter Tinamaria and son-in-law Scott, and extremely proud Nunnie of her granddaughter Elizabeth Rose and granddog Tiffany. She was a loving "sister" to Anita (wife of Don's late brother Vinnie) and Mina (wife of Don's late brother Bobby), and a loving aunt to her nieces and nephews. Born on August 21, 1947, Sandy was a graduate of Brockton High School Class of 1965. She grew up on the East Side of Brockton on Otis Street, then moved to Breer Circle, where she lived for 57 years. Her Breer Circle neighbors became lifelong friends. She took pride in her home, always opening her door to everyone and creating special memories with them. Sandy worked for the Massachusetts District Court and Probate and Family Court for a total 34 years, 10 months and two days to be exact until her retirement in October 2003. When she retired, she was blessed to spend a lot of time with her family, especially her granddaughter. In May of this year, Sandy decided to stop cancer treatments because the treatments were forcing her into multiple hospital stays. She decided to refocus her energies on having quality time for whatever time she had left. She and Don moved in with Tinamaria, Scott, Elizabeth and Tiffany. She was graced with happy times surrounded by her family, sharing dinners and having nightly Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy competitions. It was a gift for her family to be able to give her this time together. Sandy was fortunate to have so many loving family members and friends throughout her life, friends that became family. She enjoyed so many laughs and wonderful memories with them. Her favorite memories were reminiscing about the old days, cooking meals for loved ones, watching her beloved Patriots (though she became a Buccaneer's fan when Tom Brady left New England), taking trips to Foxwoods, Martha's Vineyard and the North End, traveling to Florida, celebrating the holidays, hosting backyard cookouts or simply sitting around the dining table sharing a meal. Sandy loved everything about Christmas. She was known to start decorating months in advance. She loved looking out her picture window and watching the snow fall while listening to Christmas carols and enjoying a cup of tea or hot chocolate. She was the most giving person you would ever meet. She never put herself first. Her greatest quality was the willingness to help anyone that needed it. If you had her in your corner, you knew you were taken care of. Sandy will be greatly missed by all those she touched throughout her life, and there were so many. She was the epitome of love and kindness. She had a smile for everyone, and you could not feel anything but happy after an encounter with her. Thank you to her amazing oncology team at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, specifically Dr. Panagiotis Konstantinopoulos and Susanne Menon and the dedicated team at Beacon Hospice for the compassion, care and knowledge provided to her throughout her journey, and to Fr. Jason Giombetti and Fr. Bill Devine for the countless visits and spiritual guidance she was blessed to receive. Our family can never properly put into words how much the support, grace and expertise they provided means to us. Until we meet again – we love you so much. Funeral from the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 441 South Main St., (Rt28) West Bridgewater on Saturday, September 11th at 10:00AM thence to St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 103 Center St., Bridgewater where a funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of her soul at 11:00AM.
