Obituary

Scott. R. Sterling, 54, of Boston, passed away Monday, April 12, 2021. He was the husband of Christina A. DiIorio-Sterling. In addition to his wife, Christina, Scott is survived by his brother Shawn Sterling (Kristin) of North Carolina; his mother in law Athina DiIorio of Brockton; brother in law Richard DiIorio (Susan) of North Easton; Arthur Handras (Vaya) of Hudson, NH; his Aunt Marge Nutter (Bob) of Stoughton; and his nephews and nieces, Richie and Alec DiIorio; Christina Handras; and MacKenzie and Connor Sterling. He is also survived by many loving cousins. Scott also leaves behind many loyal and dedicated colleagues and childhood friends. Scott graduated from Brockton High School in 1985 and attended Bridgewater State University where he studied aviation. Scott soon enlisted in the U.S. Army and moved to Georgia and North Carolina. Upon retirement he was a longtime resident of Boston. Scott served in the U.S. Army Special Operations from 1990 to December 2001. He served in the 75th Ranger Regiment and 1st SFOD Delta Force. While he was very private and forever humble about his accomplishments, he deserves a hard salute for his service to this great nation. His time with the Special Forces was filled with endless stories and experiences - none of which he spoke about, but all of which were his part of his destiny and enriched his life. These experiences created strong bonds of brotherhood that have carried him throughout his life, up until his passing. Following his career with the government Scott continued to serve the nation and his comrades through his work in the defense industry. He first served as Vice President of DoD Development for L-3 Technologies where he worked to develop world class night vision, lasers and weapon sights for soldiers. He later took on the role of President of Encore Technologies where he moved to the consumer electronics industry. Most recently, Scott was employed as Chief of Staff for Gentex Corporation where he was pivotal in deploying next generation innovation for integrated head worn systems targeted at defense security and industrial applications for improved situational awareness and protection. Scott holds several U.S. Patents in the defense industry, as well as the consumer electronics industry. As one friend put it - Scott accomplished everything he set his mind too. There was not a single dream or goal that he did not meet or exceed. His mantra was "get busy living - or get busy dying" from his favorite movie Shawshank Redemption. Indeed - he lived. He has seen the earth from under a canopy and felt the depths of the ocean in the darkness of night. He was an expert marksman, sniper and breacher. Skydiving was more than a job, spending many weekends jumping for "fun." Scott constantly pushed himself for the next best thing even in his personal life. He trained for ultramarathons because running a regular marathon just wasn't enough. He was an expert skier who loved the thrill of speed and challenging conditions. He was an avid boater his entire life, and despite being skilled at handling boats, he obtained his Captain's license from the U.S. Coast Guard. He spent countless hours fishing off of Castle Island, Boston Harbor and Buzzards Bay. His boat "Freedom" was exactly that - taking him up and down the coast of Massachusetts, from Cape Ann to Provincetown. Scott is now in the hands of God, at peace, watching from the highest of heights with his fallen friends and family. A funeral mass will be held in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 439 West St., Brockton on Saturday, April 17th at 10:30am with interment to follow in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
