Obituary

Shirley Louise (Creeden) Burgess passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on September 24, 2025, in Harwich, MA.

In a life defined by devotion to family, Shirley was a steady presence, offering unwavering love, guidance, and encouragement to her four children, twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and their spouses and partners — nearly all of whom affectionately knew her as "Nannie."

Shirley was happiest when surrounded by her loved ones: offering advice, sharing stories, or simply listening. She welcomed everyone with warmth and compassion, creating a home where all felt accepted and cared for.

Born in Brockton, MA, Shirley was a devout Catholic and among the first teachers at Saint Coleman's Elementary School, where she also remained a lifelong parishioner. She later worked alongside her family at their business, House of Burgess Liquors.

Her family fondly remembers summer days at Cape Cod beaches, getaways to their vacation home in Harwich and their chalet in Bethlehem, New Hampshire, and countless sleepovers at Nannie and Bampy's house. An avid reader and talented writer, Shirley even authored a children's book.

She took great pride in knitting: tiny booties and washcloths to welcome new babies, as well as blankets that became cherished keepsakes among her loved ones. Shirley was also a devoted fan of her cherished "Boys of Summer," the Boston Red Sox.

Through nearly 99 years, two constants defined her life: her steadfast devotion to family and her daily ritual of instant coffee and toast each morning.

Shirley is predeceased by her husband, Edward S. Burgess, Sr. and her daughter, Marlene (Burgess) Dawson. She is survived by her son Edward S. "Ted" (Gayle) Burgess, Jr. of Halifax; James (Noreen) Burgess of Harwich; Colleen Burgess and Kevin Cotter of Cohasset; and Robert (Marlene) Dawson of Brewster. She also leaves behind twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and many extended family members who adored her. Shirley's final years were filled with love, comfort, and devoted care at the home of her son James and Noreen in Harwich.
