Obituary

Vaios "Van" E. Nikolakakos, 59 of Randolph, died suddenly at his home on Friday, August 12, 2022. He was the son of Mrs. Despina (Boutas) Nikolakakos and the late Evangelos Nikolakakos both originally of St. George, Karditsa, Greece and later Randolph, MA and the grandson of the late Agoritsa Boutas, also originally of St. George, Karditsa, Greece. Van was born in St. George, Karditsa, Greece in May 1963 and along with his parents, brother, and maternal grandmother emigrated from Greece to the United States in 1966 and settled in Brockton, MA. Van attended Brockton Public Schools and graduated from Brockton High School in 1981. He then attended Northeastern University and graduated in 1986 with a degree in engineering. Van enlisted in the US Navy in 1987 and served for four years during which he said he was able to "travel the world." During his time in the Navy, he was stationed in San Diego, CA where he would always say the weather was just "perfect" especially compared to New England Winters. It was during his time in the Navy that he was given his second nickname "Niko" which is what many of his friends started calling him when he returned home where he continued to serve in the US Naval Reserves for an additional four years. His immigrant family has always been proud of his service to the United States of America. After retiring from the Navy, Van assisted his family in running their various businesses until his death. In the last few years, Van also spent time working at a local Home Depot where he made many friends but most recently, he worked as an Electrical Engineer with Amtrack and made many good friendships there, as well. Van's wit and outgoing personality will be missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his mother, Despina Nikolakakos and his brother Demetrios (James) Nikolakakos both of Randolph, MA and many aunts, uncles, and cousins both here and in Greece. Funeral Services will be held in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 457 Oak St., Brockton on Wednesday, August 24th at 12:00PM. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt123) Brockton on Tuesday from 4:00-8:00PM.
